A Dam (sic) fine thing!

Pulled back the curtains this morning to a cloudless sky over vast red desert landscape, with Lake Powell and a lush green golf course in the foreground....nice! We laid low until a coach-load of French tourists left and then headed for breakfast before Skyping 'home'. However, 'viewing' on the other end was by iPhone which when passed around was, for us, akin to watching an 'Aneka Rice can fixit' programme! Before leaving Page we visited Glen Canyon Dam and took the tour. What an incredible feet of engineering!
It took three years to complete (in 1963) and consumed one-million tons of concrete. Its seven-hundred feet deep and you descend five-hundred feet in an elevator to view its hydro-electric turbines. Lake Powell was created as a result of the dam having been built (across the Colorado River) and this, surrounded by canyons, is simply magnificent.......without it, cities such as Las Vegas could not survive. Pulling out of Page we headed south for Grand Canyon City on the South Rim. The journey was once again scenic with changing desert landscape....until we approached Grand Canyon when it became distinctly greener and forested.
Then we caught a glimpse of the enormity of the Canyon itself....which photos can't capture!
We found our resort more easily than we found our room and look forward to visiting the Canyon properly tomorrow. And here's another piece of road-trip music to finish off.....
