Another Washington!
A beautiful beginning to the day, sun shining and the Atlantic breeze just a memory .... perfect conditions for a final dawn stroll along the shoreline. As expected, the hotel was less busy today as most of the weekend visitors exited, stage right, yesterday. Breakfast consumed, we hijacked a luggage cart from the lobby, loaded-up, and bid farewell to the Holiday Inn and the Outer Banks. We made for Highway 64E on the Inner Banks, driving for a couple of hours in very light traffic, through a largely agricultural landscape. Bypassing Plymouth, we looked for the next likely-looking spot to stop for coffee. Fortune smiled upon us when we overrode the GPS at Washington (North Carolina) where we received a warm welcome at the local Visitor Centre. having been brought up to speed with the historical significance of Washington ..... once a deep berth port, the centre of the spice trade, and the focal point of a significant siege in the Civil War ....... we walked down Water Street, taking-in the magnificent views offered from the nearby board-walk and found the best coffee spot in town, at the Red Caboose (once the old railway snack bar).
We were immediately taken by Washington and our instincts proved correct when we came into contact and struck-up a conversation with local resident 'Rachel', who kindly invited us to sit a while on the porch of her lovely home ...... there we learned a great deal about the town ...... and put the world to rights! A great way to while away some time on a sunny afternoon. All too soon it was time to leave and bid farewell, swapped contact details and set off for our final destination 'The Hampton Inn' , Moorehead City. It proved to be an uneventful but enjoyable drive past fields of growing cotton, soya beans, and tobacco. Reaching our destination we discovered that our hotel is really nice and our room overlooks the sea.
I feel it could be seafood again tonight! And finally, here's a platter that was featured often on Sirrus XM, today (by Clarence Frogman Henry)
