Our hotel room opens to an exterior corridor on the third floor of our hotel and seeing blue sky and feeling warm air on opening the door this morning suggested it was going to be a hot one! An brisk walk across town and back via the riverside, confirmed it!! So having spent yesterday pounding Savannah's streets, in the heat, today we adopted 'Plan B'. We drove a short distance along I95 to the National 8th Airforce Museum, which had come highly recommended.
As usual, the staff were welcoming and informative and the exhibits were clear and interesting. We were soon ushered through a series of theatres, in each of which we saw a short simulation of a World War II mission briefing and bomber raid. The presentations were introduced by Paul Casson, one of the few remaining B17 pilots who had flown many missions from South-east England, during the war.
He was a true diamond and had lots of poignant stories. We really enjoyed our visit, including a stroll around its memorial gardens.
Emerging into the very hot midday sun we struck-out for a nearby cinema and sought cool refuge in one of its auditoriums .... our first such visit of the trip .... where we saw the latest X-Men blockbuster (with hot dog!) A quick stock-up at Walmarts and we were done for the day ..... back to the local pub Churchill's for dinner! As musical aide memoir for today, it had to be an oldie from The Andrews Sisters!
