A Mammoth Task!

Today started early and following a brisk walk in the chilly mountain air (looking out for bears!) we made a plan to explore the Mammoth Lakes area. Initially we drove to Mono Lake, some thirty miles away. On arrival we caught a tour with a local guide and were told about the geological and natural history of the lake.
Formed millions of years ago in a basin surrounded by the Sierra Nevada's and other mountain ranges, the lake is twice as salty as the sea and yet provides a unique wildlife habitat. Close to shore, large columns of mineral deposits, known as Tufa, rise out of the lake, providing a strange but attractive view.
It was then time for coffee, for which we drove into the nearby town of Lee Vining .... a quote was written on the wall of the coffee shop: "Where coffee is served there is graciousness, happiness, and friendliness" ....... obviously not penned by the girl who served us! We then headed for Bodie for the afternoon, probably the best preserved gold-mining ghost town in the US. To reach it, we had to negotiate several miles of narrow dirt track, an interesting experience, particularly for those driving camper-vans (towing cars!)The journey was worth the effort, as the town is incredibly well preserved.
Hard to believe that at one point in history tens of thousands lived there and in which there was one church, forty drinking dens, and many violent deaths!
Making our way back to base we took-in the June Lake and Mammoth Lakes Scenic Loops. Worth the detour! A great day that coincided with our Ruby Wedding Anniversary .... and for today's music choice it has to be the Doors "People are Strange" (No connection!)
