Once round the lake!
Being our first time near the second deepest lake in the USA we thought it best to spend the day seeing it in its entirety. Ordinarily this can be done by driving its sixty-five circumference, which switches between California and Nevada.
However, we decided to add a side-trip via Carson City, to Virginia City. Climbing high into the Nevada hills we saw some spectacular views and spotted a couple of the wild horses that graze there. Reaching the City we parked close to St Peter's Church and walked the short distance uphill to Main Street. Virginia City was founded on the back of gold and silver deposits discovered there in the 1800's and throughout its history its seen significant change. Nevertheless, its original buildings are superbly maintained, even down to the boardwalks!
These days its a tourist town with lots of shops, eating places, saloons, and men who look like ZZ Topp wanabees! ...... all providing reminders of the City's previous lives as a mining town and much later, a sanctuary for the Hippie movement! Mark Twain once lived in the City, working on the City newspaper, and among the many historical exhibits on show, the Red Dog saloon has 'The Suicide Table'; a card table which developed a formidable reputation in respect of the fate of several unfortunate gamblers who played cards on it!
Having taken an excellent guided tour of the City and Skyped Jenny from an espresso coffee shop, we set-off to complete the driving-loop of Lake Tahoe. We passed through several neat lakeside towns and stopped-off to take in some inspirational views of Emerald Bay.
The weather was kind and all in all, we had another memorable day, rounded-off by seeing the sunset over the lake. The only downside today was losing the third member of our road-trip crew 'Sirius XM' .... the subscription expired!! So today's musical reminder comes courtesy of Radio Tahoe ....... 'Woodstock', the version by Crosby, Stills and Nash.
