Highway to Hell!
Ok, so the title of today's blog is an overstatement, but Highway 40, which ran the best part of our route to South Lake Tahoe, is some drive! Albeit, the scenery was spectacular throughout, but any road without a centre-line (owing to 'narrowness') and which constantly switches up, down, and across mountains and valleys, can be challenging. Fortunately, traffic was exceptionally light and the weather, wonderful! In fact, it was an interesting ride through tiny towns (e.g. Tuttletown; population 105) and majestic vistas (and we saw the dramatic effects that the drought has had on water levels, generally).
We stopped briefly at Big Trees for coffee and then Alpine Lake, to enjoy a picnic, where we effectively had exclusive viewing rights of the Lake from a wooded picnic site.
A very pleasant spot to while away some time!
We finally reached South Lake Tahoe by mid-afternoon and checked into the Alder Inn, our latest temporary abode; its situated close to the lakeshore, our room is just the job, and we are well placed to explore the surrounding area tomorrow! Once again our travels had the back-drop of Sirius XM's 'Sounds of the Sixties' and today, Jefferson Airplane caught the imagination with 'Don't you need somebody to love'!
