Going to the Sun(?) Road!

Today introduced itself with a show of low-hanging cloud and some showers, but 'hey' we are in the Rockies! I watched bemused as a couple bemoaned the fact that it wasn't sunny to the front-desk clerk who had to persuade them to go to Glacier Park, the prime object of their visit! I mean, you have to make the best of the weather-hand you're dealt!! (It was reminiscent of a story told to us at the Crazy Horse Monument about people who ask for refunds because the project isn't yet finished, and of those people who return items the 'Pound Shop'!) We had our usual buffet breakfast (the toaster proving too much of a challenge to some co-guests, who left their pre-toasted remnants in the appliance!) and then embarked for the local 'Safeway' to employ my 'Membership'discount card again! Then we obeyed the GPS and found Glacier's West entrance, some twenty miles away. Our Annual Pass saved us a further $25 entry fee (now well in credit!) and we were soon looking round the lakeside village souvenir shops. Unfortunately the fifty-mile 'Going to the Sun Road' was not yet fully open and before driving what had been opened, we queued for coffee at "Eddie's Cafe". The server at the window was enthusiastic and appeared to want to help, but seemed challenged by our verbal requests.....it was reassuring to be told by a nearby New Yorker "I can understand your English perfectly....you're 'English'!". The lake-shore drive was picturesque and arriving at 'Avalanche Creek' we walked the Cedar Loop trail. It may have been wet, but the forest was unmissable. A freak rainstorm resulted in our having a lengthy chat with a guy from Sandusky(OH) and then we headed back to McDonald Lake Village where we spotted the 1930's buses which tour the park. Having determined to visit the other side of Glacier tomorrow, we exited the park and headed for nearby Kalispell, where we meandered Main Street and visited a great soda fountain bar located in what was once the Grand Theatre and met some great people. All in all, another good day Montana! As for a musical reminder of the day, well how about.......

  1. Enjoying your posts here and on FB. The recent pics remind me of the Lake District, but writ large. I'd be interested to know if you find that too?
