Where am I?!!!!
A slightly unusual day began when we checked-out of our motel, attended to the car at the gas station and stocked-up on provisions at Safeway. Just about ready to journey towards our next destination our GPS 'gave up the ghost'.....bummer!!!! Not to make a drama from a minor crisis we determined that 'maps' were not a reasonable contingency (a bit like rubbing sticks together when 'out of matches'!) so we tentatively made our way downtown in search of a Holy Grail! Having parked, we called into a local stationers to ask where we might buy a replacement GPS,locally. No sooner had we explained our problem when the staff were telephoning Walmart and other local retailers to determine the best option. 'Office Depot' was the answer and I legged-it several blocks across the railway tracks to find it. The Depot had two units in stock and I was soon on my way back to rejoin Pat in a great coffee shop where we got acquainted with our new travel companion....which has a striking American accent! With everything 'right in the world' again, we set out for Deadwood via Sturgis.
The latter is the Mecca for Harley Davies enthusiasts and each year hosts a mega rally for bikers across the planet (and beyond!). Its a small town and a tad tacky, but it houses 'The Biker Hall of Fame' and is a magnet for the biker fraternity. The temperature was close to ninety as we set out again for Deadwood and arriving there it was good to feel a breeze that seemed to cool things down a little.
We spotted a Trolley Tour..... irresistible!
Off we went around this gambling town, once the epicentre of the lawless Black Hills gold rush. The tour included visits to Boot Hill where Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane are laid to rest, and to the original and current sites of 'Saloon Number 10' where Wild Bill met his end playing poker, holding the "Dead Man's Hand"!
We picked our way back to the car, past the afternoon street gunfight, and took off again for our next hotel close to Devils Tower (Wyoming).
The hotel is cool, a log-chalet styled structure on the edge of Hulett, a small town with a Population of around 500! Our dinner option was a deli or The Ponderosa Cafe & Bar. We chose the latter and were not disappointed....the folks are sure friendly round here!! An unusual choice of music today, but this just happened to be playing as we walked down Deadwood's Main Street today:
