Montana!

Apparently, the UK is wet and windy, but as we left Sheridan we had the makings of another nice day.....at breakfast however we chatted with some guys who whilst travelling-up the I90 yesterday were forced to seek refuge from a couple of tornadoes! They shared their video footage with us to prove it, complete with background noise of golf-ball-sized hailstone bouncing on the car roof! We kept a wary eye on the skies as we drove further west and it felt good to cross the Montana State line without so much as a raindrop! They call this state "Big Sky Country" and the landscape and horizon are massive...vast plains rolling into the distance to meet the mountain ranges. At the half-way mark we saw a sign for the historic site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn where Custer and many of the Seventh Cavalry were massacred by several native Indian tribes, particularly the Lakota. This being a National Monument enabled me to save a few bob again with my 'Annual Pass'! As usual, the Ranger tour was interesting and informative and a drive around the battlefield site put the scale of this complex event into perspective. (This is one of only three battlefields in the world where the fallen are marked individually.....white markers for soldiers and red for Indian Braves.) After a couple of hours, we rejoined the I90 West and headed for Billings, probably the largest town in Montana and dominated by the oil industry. We found the Springfield Suites easily and were knocked out with our recently 're-modelled' room!! Having unloaded the luggage cart we visited the nearby mall and had a quick scoot round, but we could have been anywhere really! So back to base and hidden treasure....a Texas Roadhouse just behind the hotel! Finally, I looked for a suitable piece of music to reflect 'Montana', but as I didn't particularly care for Duane Eddy's "Blue Montana Skies", I went with this retro piece from Johnny and the Hurricanes!
