Getting into the swing!
The pace of life definitely easy here and if you're seeking 'elegance' its not plentiful! The hotel has really grown on us and everyone is helpful and happy ... and why not!
Of course the day began sunny and by nine o'clock it was really warming-up (A local told us that the word Lahaina meant 'fierce sun!')..... and the surfers were out early.
On the spur of the moment we signed-up for a boat trip with some marine biologists and set-off for a three-hour Dolphin-encounter trip. The commentary was entertaining throughout and we were fortunate to find and spend an hour in the company of a pod of around 150 Spinner Dolphins. How cool was that?! To top things off, as we returned to Lahaina, we took time out to cruise around the local coral reef where we spotted a number of Hawaii Sea Turtles playing around in the shallow water. During our outing we sailed close to Lana'i, another of the four islands that make-up Maui County. Now here's the thing, the latter island was recently bought by Larry Ellison (CEO of Oracle), for $300M .... the same person, no less, who bought one of the Newport Mansions when we were there a couple of years ago. Can this be simply coincidence or is it the basis for a conspiracy theory! (Incidentally, the Island was also the venue for Bill Gates' Wedding ceremony!)Once on terra firma again, it was time to fire-up the car and take-off for the Kula Botanical Gardens, near HaleaKala National Park. A nice drive with great views of the ocean. The gardens were quaint and obviously a work of love, in parts reminiscent of the TV Series 'Lost'!
Returning via 'Historic Makawao' (once a cowboy town) we arrived in just in time to watch the birds flock to the nearby Banyan tree in their thousands, a clear signal that the sun was about to set, majestically, over the ocean.
As a musical reminder of the day, I had to go for the following track which played whist we were having dinner and which seems to reflect the general mood of this place (even though the subject matter concerns Colorado!!)
