Today we had a big drive ahead as we were leaving Fargo and heading west across North Dakota's plains, to Medora. We literally drove around three-hundred miles along I94W, stopping off at Bismark for coffee and then at Gladstone, for a side trip along its Enchanted Highway. The scenery was predominantly rolling green pastureland, farms, and cows! Well that is until we pulled of at Exit 72, for Gladstone. In effect, the Enchanted Highway owes little to magic, but much to one man's vision and steadfast determination to realise it. Imagine, if you can, a 30-mile stretch of isolated road, lined with giant sculptures made from scrap metal, depicting a range of images from grasshoppers, to a tin-man family.
And there you have it! They say Fargo is 'North of normal' but Gladstone is something else!! As for Medora, well first impressions suggest that it was the real thing, in terms of being a cowboy town. In fact, its home to the "Cowboy Hall of Fame" and a number of buildings have been refurbished or reconstructed to reflect how the town was in the 1800s and when it was later associated with Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough riders.
And today's musical aide memoir .... from the early 60's, Dion and Diane (owing mainly to the crazy Kazoo playing!)
