Whitefish

After a superb stay in the Home2 Suites, at Helena, we headed north to Whitefish, another 3+ hour drive. This time we didn't take the I94W, but drove various highways, through heavily forested country and ultimately, alongside Flathead Lake. Of course we were deep into hunting and fishing territory and it showed! We stopped briefly at a roadside cafe for coffee and were surrounded by the whole of the local population who were banded together for Sunday breakfast. A couple of the locals ate as if it was their only breakfast for the week! But they were all well mannered and welcoming. We arrived at the BW Rocky Mountain Lodge at 1:20 and were delighted with our room. We hit the ground running and were soon walking to the downtown area, to re-familiarise ourselves with the local shops etc.

Whitefish owes its existence to the development of the Great Northern Railroad in the early 1900s and was originally named Stumptown, owing to the number of trees that were cut down, in order to enable the building of the downtown area. Then, by the 1940s, a ski resort was established at Big Mountain and a future based on tourism was made certain. As for us, we called into the restaurant next to the Brewery, early evening, for dinner .... pesto encrusted trout and asparagus! Excellent!!

As a musical reminder of today's drive it has to be "Shake, Rattle and Roll", as covered by Joe Turner!
