Another side of the coin!
With the cloud cover having cleared overnight we set off from Whitefish after breakfast and a quick 'Safeway' pit-stop. As Glacier Park's "Going to the Sun Road" remained partly closed, we were forced to drive some seventy-eight miles to get to the Park's (East) St Mary's entrance. The drive itself was scenic, with glacial rivers and snow covered peaks everywhere.....and the occasional deer wandering onto the roadway, and horse grazing!
Arriving in the Park, we sought advice from a Ranger and were soon heading for Sun Point, to picnic! We stopped next to the lake and took the short nature trail by the lakeside, spotting a couple of deer foraging close-by under some trees.
Back to the car and another short drive to an overlook from which the full expanse of a massive glacial lake and its surrounding mountains could be viewed in one breathtaking 'take'!
We followed a trail from the parking lot to a nearby waterfall and along the way met and chatted to several people, and saw more deer and an abundance of plants and wild-flowers. Completing the drive along the stretch of road that had been opened-up we got a great view of St Mary's falls and of the St Joseph's glacier overlook. We saw the park at its spectacular best!!
Heading home, we drove along empty highways in the late afternoon sunshine and marvelled at the beauty of Montana! My musical reminiscence of the day is a classic piece from Les Paul......
