Missing the Point!
The day was very promising, to begin with. After breakfast we pulled out of the Comfort Inn, visiting Wholefoods for essential supplies and gassing-up the car at a '76' Gas Station, randomly chosen but the GPS. Fortunately, the pay at pump option was a well behaved one and whilst not a PIN protected payment system, it didn't require a zip code! (NB Using credit/debit cards is a hit and miss affair, here, at present. The use of PIN identification is gradually being phased in, Yep, only now! And as many cashiers don't get it, you are often asked to swipe your card, only for it to be declined...... so beware!! And at gas stations, you can fake a zip code by inputting your five digit postcode, substituting zeros for non-numeric characters). Anyway, admin sorted, we drove down to Carmel, took in the beach, coffee, and some shops, Its a nice spot, but expensive!
As it was sunny, we also drove the Seventeen Mile Drive, passing Pebble Beach golf course, several homes that would require a pact with the devil to acquire, and some fabulous coastline.
Then, having completed the driving loop, we headed off for Morro Bay via Big Sur. However, following the GPS' directions, unthinkingly (a real rookie error!) we soon realised that we were heading south along Salinas Valley, rather than on the coastal Route 1 road. So we headed back to Monterey, again. We threw a six and set off for Rout 1 and were soon in awe of the incredible vistas of Big Sur. But then we encounteredd our next obstacle. Twenty miles into the journey we met the 'Road Closed, No Diversion' signs!! In effect we were destined never to reach 'Raggedy Point', this trip, as a failed bridge and biblical mudslide had taken out the road, over the winter!! So it was back to Monterey, yet again, and the Salinas Valley! We drove through some of the most fertile land imaginable where everything from avocados to zuccini are grown and finally arrived at Morrow Bay and the Seaside Inn, at 6:00 pm.. At check in, a guy bid me good day and asked how my day had gone so far ..... a big mistake on his part! But our room was fine and after dinner by the ocean, at the Dutchman's, it appeared that we'd had another good day!
Today we listened to 50's music in the car and a lot of it! So today's musical selection is from this era: 'Raunchy' by Billy Vaughn
