San Diego

Today we left LA, heading south towards our next destination, Shelter Island, San Diego. We made a brief detour on the way, visiting La Jolla, a beautiful town by the ocean. By chance, we stumbled on a coastal drive through a very wealthy suburb, full of swanky houses overlooking the ocean. After some searching, we found a two hour parking spot on a neat little shopping strip and broke off for coffee. Returning to the car, it was nice to discover that we could reach Shelter Island via Mission Street without having to get back on I5.

Arriving at our hotel, the Best Western Island Palms, it was reassuring to see that our past recollection of the place was right .... its a very nice stopover, with great rooms and views. We dined in its restaurant overlooking the marina before walking down to the pier and catching sight of some pelicans.

Maybe an odd choice of music today, but its very apt! "We're on vacation", Connie Francis!
