Today began with sunshine as we packed-up and made for The White Mountains in New Hampshire and specifically for the town of North Conway. As we drove south on I95 and then west on I395, it became cloudy and showery, but it remained warm and with a four-hour drive ahead, it wasn't a problem. Along the way we passed a number of quaint towns, most of which we'd never heard of, but which would have made good stopovers. Several sat alongside some very nice lakes. We also passed lots of pumpkins and lobster restaurants! At one point we were in range of Maine's Shaker Village. As we got closer to the state border with New Hampshire the traffic volume thinned and we began to appreciate our SUV. It appears that the mountain highways are under major reconstruction and for several miles, the construction strategy was simply to remove all existing tarmac and let the cars drive over the unmetalled surface. It works, particularly if you're driving a vehicle with heavy suspension, as we are! Arriving in Conway, we passed the Red Jacket Inn where we stayed with David, some years ago, and where he'd successfully managed the waffle-maker! The Kearsage Inn, where we are staying currently, is considerably closer to downtown and the historic railway station .... its a real find ..... definitely recommended to others!
As we are now firmly in the heart of New England's forested zone, what better music than a rare version of Norwegian Wood, by The Beatles?!
