Toss of a coin for Coos Bay!
The day began in Cannon Beach with warm sunshine for a final walk along the shoreline, where not one piece of litter could be seen! (The trick to walking here is to judge when you're 'half-tired' and only then then turn back!) Before saying our goodbyes to the lovely owners of the Sea Breeze, we walked into town and ordered an 'on the move' lunch which we later ate at a Shell Gas Station. There we caused near havoc getting 'coffee to go'....a long story! The drive down Highway 101, south of Cannon Beach, is spectacular and like Alaska's Seward Highway is officially designated "A Scenic Byway". The views of ocean, sand, and lighthouses are stunning.....and the twisting road provided some pre-flight practice before driving "Big Sur" again, in about week or so! During the four-hours or so it took to reach Coos Bay (our 'chance-determined' overnight stay) we tested and proved the theory that wherever you are in the States, you'll struggle to find a decent radio channel.....but if you like Country & Western!! Arriving at Coos Bay it was grey and a bit drizzly and to be honest we thought it looked a little down at heel. But we were wrong and once bedded-in for the night we succumbed to its charms. The old town reminded us of a Disney set and its historic Egyptian Theatre just has to be preserved! We had a choice of places to eat and fortunately we picked "Benetti's", an old-style Italian restaurant where bread, soup and salad are 'thrown-in' with every order.....we ordered Cannelloni off the 'small portion' menu and this coupled with garlic bread, a tureen of Minestrone soup, and a couple of green salads was ample! Together with a beer and a glass of wine, the check came to $33! (I hope they read this at "San Carlos"!!) Today's musical selection was strongly influenced by the CD's which we played and one in particular that reminded us of driving through Wales!
