Homer....the fiinal 'Jewel in the Crown'!

Homer was our final Alaskan base before returning to Anchorage, there to fly to Seattle on Saturday and pick-up our adventure in the ‘Lower 48’. Blue skies ruled as we drove south through the bluffs and coves of Cook’s Inlet, stopping occasionally to marvel at the ‘Ring of Fire‘ volcanoes, dominated by Mt. Redoubt.
(The volcanoes are active, but were not ‘steaming’ on the day!) In Homer, we were immediately struck by its beautiful ‘land’s end’ setting and having called at the Visitor Centre, we made straight for the ‘Two Sisters Bakery’….being instructed to do so by a guy from North Dakota who gave us a ‘heads up’ during the boat cruise at Seward. (He and his wife had spent five hours at the Bakery and whilst we now recognise how this is eminently possible, we limited our visit(s) to twenty minutes!
Next stop was check-in at the Land’s End Resort, which sits at the end of the Homer Spit ……we had a fabulous room, a stone’s throw from the ocean. Luggage stowed, we took a short scenic drive back into town and meandered its small streets on foot. We called-in a neat clothes shop where we chatted with Kerry, a lovely lady, originally from LA, but who’s lived here for a number of years. (If you get to read this Kerry.....follow your dream!). We also stumbled across ‘Mr and Mrs S. Clause’ and their small tent-based retail operation!....so now you know where they hang-out for the rest of the year and its not too far south of their main office!! Mid-afternoon we motored back to our private ocean view and watched the boats and wildlife from our balcony, before walking to Captain Patty’s Fish Restaurant for a dinner.
Today (Friday) after Skyping the fair Jenny and our 'son and heir', Dave, we took-in a view of the sun over the water outside our room and then called-in the Two Sisters.....where we met a really nice guy 'Randy' and than drove the 200+ miles back to Anchorage with not a cloud in sight...more laundry and brushing Homer's 'volcano ash' from our shoes....we love Alaska!!

(Some may have noticed that 'yesterday's blog post' went walkabout...that's due to a big technical problem at Google (not laziness on my part!). And today’s musical treat?.....an old and rarely played classic heard earlier on FM93.3, from Booker T and the Mg's!

  1. Yup, just like the dog and my homework, or Freddie Starr and the hamster, the blog ate my post yesterday. Wasn’t much, just an observation about the leery look on your face in the pic with Ms W and her buddies. I’ve really enjoyed the pics from Alaska as it’s not somewhere I’d ever considered going. I may revise that sometime soon.

I was going to go Seattle in July to the University of Washington Tacoma. I’ve a friend who used to be head of the School of Nursing, but she’s now back to being a regular professor, and I was going to do a couple of presentations to her master’s students. However the fare prices in July don’t justify a short trip, so I’ll go in October or November instead.

Whilst there, I was going to go to the Northwestern School of Wooden Boatbuilding at Port Hadlock. I’ve an interest in wooden boats and got to know the people NWSWB a couple of years ago. The school is only 30 years old but offers a range of programs from taster weekends to boatbuilding degrees. It’s staffed by some of the nicest people on the planet and they like to have visitors. They’d be delighted to show you round, and Port Hadlock is only 90 miles from Seattle Tacoma airport.

  2. PS I'm not a fan of tribute bands, but came across this which I think is better than the original.
