The Great Escape......
Today, we mostly escaped our Dodge 'travel capsule' to regain the use of our legs! A short scenic drive, during which we crossed the Appalachian Trail (amusingly described by Bill Bryson in "A Walk in the Woods"!) saw us in Gettysburg. We can't resist visiting the fabulous US National Parks and the Gettysburg National Civil War Monument was no exception. The Museum, its eerily-well preserved battle fields, coupled with some excellent guided tours made the day a big hit......especially as the weather was obligingly pleasant too! Late afternoon, we set the GPS coordinates for Washington and set off for a short and hair raising drive through some of the heaviest traffic ever! It was the annual 'Cherry Blossom Festival' and an overwhelming number of the locals appeared eager to mass downtown to witness it!! Anyway, we finally got to our water-front hotel, bedded the car down for the night and I reached for a Samuel Adams.....the simple joys of travel!
