Sunday in New York.....

Staying in Jersey City meant our taking the Path Train into New York and after overcoming some initial confusion with the ticketing machines, we were soon commuting like 'locals'! Arriving at the World Trade Centre, we were struck by memories of our last visit when the Twin Towers were a reality. We visited the memorial site and then headed to Battery Park and the Seaport shopping area, stopping for a beer and sandwich in a traditionally styled real ale pub.

We then walked Wall Street and up Broadway to the Empire State Building.....a hell of a trek, providing a chance to see every walk of life.....New York is one big place. We caught the Path train to Hobokem Station, New Jersey, where we were met by a friend, Steve, who drove us to his home for dinner. Steve and his wife Anne were better than perfect hosts and their house is an 'American Dream' in its own right! (Steve drives a 5.7 Jeep and has a classic Mustang.....what else can I say....I'm green!!) I just had to post the following music link!

  1. What an interesting choice of music. Forgive my language, but Sting is often thought of as every middle-aged woman’s dream, or a pretentious tw@. Now I can see him as both those things, but what I think he does best is set-up something which on the face of it is really simple and obvious, but in fact is really much more deep and difficult. One example is the song Every Breath You Take, which on the face of it is a love song, but in fact is really about an obsessive stalker. Another is An Englishman in New York which appears to be about a smart young guy with his sharp suit, umbrella, black mates, girl bass player, tea not coffee, but is really about Quentin Crip’s move to the US to escape homophobic prejudice, and to capitalize on the success of his one man show. Sting had acted with him some years before and wanted to write song about him. PS. Two final thoughts, can you believe it’s 11 years since QC died (in Manchester) and don’t we just love big US cities for their diversity?

  2. Hi Pat & Bill! Thanks for continuing to replenish our memories with you pics and comments. You are both certainly ahead of your game.
Pity the Reds couldn't do likewise. Carrick & Berbatov failures but so were the other nine men who appeared tired. Perhaps they had all decided to travel back and forth with Rio on the big day to witness the birth of Rio's daughter. Continue to enjoy your adventure and have safe journeys. Val & Pete.
